Ranjith speaks to Fides: the message of the motu proprio

Father U. M. Lang on Christian Latin as a Liturgical Language

Huh?
THE LEGITIMACY OF THE USE OF THE VERNACULAR (ENGLISH) LANGUAGE IN THE CELEBRATION OF THE EXTRAORDINARY FORM OF THE MASS ACCORDING TO THE MOTU PROPRIO SUMMORUM PONTIFICUM OF POPE BENEDICT XVI
By Rene Henry Gracida, Bishop Emeritus of Corpus Christi

I think Bishop Gracida needs to re-read the MP. It says that the READINGS, i.e., Epistle and Gospel, can be in approved vernacular. That is ALL it says, and there is no basis for the claim that changes made after the 1962 missal was published are in fact part of that missal. He is apparently approving 1964 hybrid masses, which I have to think are expressly forbidden by the 1962 missal.

Yes.

J.Brown is quite right.
Summorum Pontificum makes it quite clear that the "old Mass" to be used is the 1962 Missal of Bl. John XIII.

There is no permission for the later variations of this Missal.

Summorum Pontificum allows for the use of vernacular readings, i.e. Epistle and Gospel, but that is all.

The Bishop appears to have misinterpreted the Motu Proprio, (but he's not alone !)

I hope this announcement by Bishop Gracida is passed on to the relevant authorities in Roe for clarification.

The current Ordinary of Corpus Christi is the Most Rev. Edmond Carmody. I don't know if he has said or written anything about the MP SP yet.

So Bp. Gracida's opinion is just that -- an opinion.

There is no "1964 hybrid Mass". The Bishop is speaking of a 1964 American missal that is the 1962 missal containing vernacular translations of some of the Ordinary and Propers. This missal was supplanted in less than a year by the 1965 Missal introduced by the decree "Inter Oecumenici". That's the missal that eliminated Psalm 42 and the Last Gospel, and reduced the communion formula to "Corpus Christi. Amen."
