As deadline looms, still no surprises...

By Brian Kopp

Rorate Caeli has an unsurprising excerpt posted:
Williamson: "Our answer will be negative"
"I appreciated the tone of the letter of Cardinal Castrillón Hoyos, but I frankly believe that nothing will be done and that our answer will be negative."
There's lots of conjecture going on about who might have leaked "The Five Conditions."

Regardless of who leaked them, Bishop Williamson's making this public statement, prior to Bishop Fellay making a formal response as leader of the SSPX, is truly reprehensible.

If you have not yet done so, please read and heed these posts at WDTPRS and TNLM:

The ONLY thing this proves, at this time, is that Bp. Williamson will remain outside if the rest of the SSPX comes home.

May he be alone and lonely in his manifest schism.

Shocking! Williamson is usually so friendly

Actually, this statement of Williamson is somewhat hopeful. In the past, we've been told that nothing would be done unless all four bishops agreed to it. His expression "I believe" undercuts this. He could have said that he was consulted, along with the others, and that there was no unanimous agreement among the bishops and, therefore, it will not be accepted. He does not say that.

He seems to be admitting here that the decision lies with Bishop Fellay alone. Let us pray for Bernard Fellay.

Sad and unsurprising.

I pray that their better nature's will prevail.

I think that we need to realise that Williamson has long played 'bad cop' in these affairs. He is the damsel who is pursued but rebuffs all overtures from the dashing young princes.

I suppose that Fr. Schmidberger, the former superior-general, is now playing good cop, and is ready to share some jokes in German with this panzerpope over a mug of Bavarian beer. Bishop de Galarretta is a good cop if only owing to his sunny disposition. Tissier is a bad cop, but not as mean and bad as Williamson. Fellay is in the centre but slightly, only slightly, on the good side. That's because he's from the Suisse Romande and, as we all know French Swiss are less cunning and less cruel and conspiratorial than are the real thing, from France.

I'm trying to inject a little humour into this, adn also to show how absurd some of the specuation is. Nerves are frazzled. Still, we must wait and pray.

I suspect that the answer from Fellay might not be a clear yes or no.

He might try to respond seeking some middle ground expressing his loyalty to the Pope but putting in enough caveats to keep the radicals happy. This all in an effort to maintain the status quo.

Question is, how will the Pope handle such a wishy washy response.

On Mr. Archbold's last comments:

No, no, look, he either signs the damned five points or he does not. Williamson has now revealed, in his latest rant, that if Fellay should not sign, the entire S.S.P.X, Rome threatens, will be declared to be in formal schism.

There is no middle ground here. The conditions impose nothing Fellay cannot accept in conscience; on the contrary, he is duty-bound to sign. He no longer has even a reason to believe that a state of necessity exists any more. Without such a state, the Society's disobedience is clearly wrongful and indefensible.
