Fr. Tim Finigan,
Thanks for the links. I have added some to the site. I have the video on my other blog (Creative Minority Reports), I loved it. Trying to keep this site informational, for now.

I do intend to cover the implementation of Summorum Ponitficum . The good, the bad, and the ugly. We will see how it goes.

One thing that might be helpful (although I don't have links to give) might be to link to a website that sells the approved 1962 Roman Ritual. The Roman Missal has been easy to find, but since all the sacraments (except priestly ordination) have been approved for use, this would be a service for priests who want to buy them (and laity who want to buy them for priests!)

Loreto Publications has a reprint on a three volume Roman Ritual, but, unsure as I am- and I am sure many priests as well- of the proper edition I am hesitant to buy it.

Thanks for this great blog, and God bless you!

I have read the letters of all four bishops that have been posted so far. There is nothing in any of them that suggests any hostility towards the terms of the Motu Proprio. The only reservation might be, where Archbishop of Miami makes reference to having allowed the "Latin Mass" for 20 years, but is not clear on which one.

Ultimately, it matters less what these bishops say, than what they do. And what they do has been spelled out to them in no uncertain terms -- for all to see. If they are to act in bad faith, they will do so with an audience, one with their superiors in the front row.

If you want to be part of a "Motu Proprio Network" of sorts, be sure to add your contact information to The Summorum Pontificum Contact Database.

As the database grows, we will be helping people in similar geographic regions get in touch with each other, and get in touch with priests, to help this new initiative get a good jump-start.

Please add your name to the network, and if you know of any priests who would be willing to offer the Latin Mass in their parish, please get them to add their names as well!

To provide information to those who attend the N.O. parishes, could a 'sample' information article on Summorum Pontificum be created and posted on your website? People could then take this article to 5-10 local parishes for publication in the weekly bulletins. It would help these parishioners better understand the Summorium Pontificum.

Also, may I suggest placing the Vatican website, your website, lumengentleman, ecclesia dei, una voce websites etc. in this article?

This would give us something solid to bring to the parishes for publication in the bulletins. Think of the thousands of people who would be informed!!

May I also suggest that this notice be run in the bulletins every week until September 14th.

Thank you for your super website. I've been referring to it as 'info central' for the Summorum Pontificum.

The publication of Summorum Pontificum foresees laymen asking that the Mass be celebrated according to the Roman Missal of 1962 promulgated by Blessed John XXIII in their parish. It would be helpful to those of us who intend to request it to have examples of letters requesting that the Mass be celebrated at one mass every Sunday in our parish. Perhaps readers might provide examples of their letters and this website could provide a centralized repository.

I can't find our bishop's official statement online, but here's the text that was sent out (Diocese of Savannah, GA):

Statement by Bishop J. Kevin Boland on Pope Benedict’s Letter
re: Expanding Use of Extraordinary Mass
July 9, 2007
On Saturday, July 7, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI issued an Apostolic letter
relaxing restrictions on the use of the Mass that was celebrated by the
Catholic Church prior to Vatican Council II. This Mass is the one that
follows the Roman Missal promulgated by Blessed John XXIII in 1962.
Frequently it is referred to as the Latin Mass.
The Apostolic letter takes effect on September 14, 2007, the feast of the
Triumph of the Holy Cross.
What does issuance of this Apostolic letter mean for the Diocese of
Savannah?
First, the Holy Father clarified that there will be a twofold use of the one
Roman rite of the Catholic Church. There will be the ordinary form—the
Mass we have been celebrating for the past 40 years—and the
extraordinary form—the Mass that was promulgated by Blessed John XXIII
in 1962. This Mass is celebrated in Latin.
Presently in the Diocese of Savannah we have at least three priests who
are capable of celebrating the extraordinary Mass of the Roman rite. There
may be others.
In the city of Savannah the Mass promulgated by Blessed John XXIII is
offered bimonthly. Sixty to seventy people attend. Prior to this instruction
from Pope Benedict it was necessary for the Bishop to give permission for
this Mass to be celebrated. Now any priest (provided he has the necessary
skills) may offer this Mass privately. The public may attend if they so wish.
The priest does not need the permission of the Bishop or the Holy See.
We will have to retool and reeducate, and all of this takes time. Many
priests know little or any Latin. It will be a challenge, and in some cases
they may not wish to celebrate the extraordinary form of the Roman rite.
The biggest challenge will be the availability of priests who are
knowledgeable enough to celebrate the extraordinary form.
We are deeply committed to do our best to meet the religious needs of the
people who are deeply devoted to the Roman rite of the Catholic Mass
promulgated by Blessed John XXIII in 1962.
With this new Apostolic letter, the Holy Father, Pope Benedict, has
expanded the use of the Roman missal that was in place immediately prior
to Vatican Council II. It is a matter of the twofold use of one rite. No matter
which form of the rite is used, it is essential that the celebration of Mass be
one of great reverence in harmony with the rubrics (directives) which apply
to each form. With more availability of the extraordinary rite, there will be a
renewed emphasis on celebrating both forms with greater dignity and
reverence.
To facilitate and coordinate proper planning and implementation of this
Apostolic Exhortation I have appointed Monsignor William O. O’Neill as
Diocesan Director.
It will take time to put a plan in place. In the meantime, if any priests are
interested in developing the necessary skills to celebrate the Mass
promulgated by Pope John XXIII, please contact Msgr. O’Neill at (912) 233-
4709; or by email at wooneill@aol.com .

Generally favorable with one concerning paragraph:

Second, where a “stable” group of faithful who adhere to the traditional “form” (the original Latin uses the adverb continenter, signifying “continuously”) requests such a Mass, a pastor (parochus) may comply, keeping in mind (1) the spiritual welfare of the group, and (2) the guidance of the Bishop, in accordance with Canon 392 of the Code, (3) together with the need for sensitivity to retaining pastoral unity and avoiding discord. The first Irish bishop to react to Summorum Pontificum is the Archbishop of Dublin. It is a positive response. He has decided to make additional provision for devotees of the Extraordinary Rite.A chaplaincy is to be created with a resident priest who will provide a daily Mass as well as the normal Sunday Mass. All sacraments will be available in the old rite. This will involve a relocation to another city centre church which is Pugin designed and very beautiful.Total silence from all other Irish bishops.

David said...

There seems to be confusion among the Bishops who claim the Extraordinary form cannot be used during the Triduum. That is not now I read Article 2 of SP which seems to state: choose one or the other. For a statement saying only the ordinary form may be used see:

Patrick -

Bishop David E. Foley of Birmingham, Alabama, seems to believe that only "certified" priests should be allowed to serve the extraordinary form of the Mass, in accordance with Summorum Pontificum.

The following letter was taken verbatim from the _One Voice_ (August 10, 2007, p. 1), which is the diocesan newspaper for the diocese of Birmingham in Alabama:

ANNOUNCEMENT

I have received with great joy the Motu Proprio from His Holiness Benedict XVI on July 7, 2007.

This document is important for two reasons:

1. It authenticates that the normative celebration of the Eucharist is the Mass of Paul VI.

2. And, because of his Holiness' pastoral concern, he has granted permission for the extraordinary celebration of the Roman Missal promulgated by Blessed John XXIII. This permission is granted for those faithful who have remained attached with such great love and affection to this ancient form.

The particulars for making this option available to the faithful are extremely important and must be approached with great pastoral care.

1. To celebrate the extra ordinary [sic] form, the Priests of our diocese must be properly trained and certified.

2. Locations must be chosen which most effectively offer this form for the faithful.

To this [sic] end, I am now beginning the processes of asking advice from the College of Priest Consultors and others who will help me in actualizing this important accommodation in the liturgical life of the Diocese. In unity with our Holy Father, I thank you for your patience as we implement his pastoral wishes.

Il can.
«Salus animarum summa lex».
+Alessandro Plotti, arcivescovo

St. Thomas More Church in San Francisco states on its website "Sunday, 5:30 p.m. Latin Tridentine Mass (coming soon)". This is an ideal parish to have a Latin Mass. They currently have Mass in Portuguese, Arabic & English. Soon all three of these communities will be able to unite in worship by attending the same Mass in the universal language of the Roman (Latin Rite) Catholic Church. Of course they could have been doing so with the Novus Ordo for the past four decades. Perhaps they have, but it isn't listed among the others.

It would be nice if a publisher would produce an interlinear Latin/English missal. The MASS OF THE CATECHUMENS is the part of the Mass that an interlinear translation would be most helpful. I made a 10 page booklet of this part of the Mass using MS Word. I'd be happy to e-mail a copy with printing instructions to anyone interested (just e-mail me).

I have the great joy of announcing to you that His Excellency, Archbishop Angel Lagdameo D.D., Archbishop of Jaro and currently President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), celebrated a Missa Cantata according to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite last September 11, 2007, 7:00 PM (Manila time) at the Carmelite Monastery Church in Lipa City, Province of Batangas (located south of Manila).

Due to various contingencies, emergencies and events, the Archbishop was not assisted by any clergy, and had only two lay servers who had to substitute at the very last minute. The Mass itself has been agreed upon only last week, and the schedule was finalized only the day before the Mass itself was about to be celebrated. One has to keep in mind that, uhm, the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite in the Philippines continues to face "Extraordinary" obstacles indeed! However, there was no question of cancelling the Mass, once the Archbishop had given his consent last week to celebrate it. This would be our moment of triumph practically on the eve of Summorum Pontificum.

The cantor (who was supposed to chant the Propers) was not able to come; however, some ten ladies formed an impromptu schola and very capably sang the Ordinary of the Mass. It was truly a "Mass at the frontlines!"

The Archbishop was ordained a priest in December 1964, and had celebrated according to the 1962 Missal in his first five months as a priest. After that, he adopted the vernacular liturgy along with almost everyone else. However, he retained his knowledge and understanding of Latin and, as Archbishop of Jaro from 2000 to the present he has been one of the few Filipino bishops who have shown sympathy and understanding for the aspirations of the faithful who love the Traditional Roman Rite. As bishop, he has celebrated the TLM twice before: once each in the years 2000 and 2001.The current Mass is his first TLM as President of the CBCP.

5.2. A música.

This morning the new Chaplaincy created by the Archbishop of Dublin Ireland came into effect.Visitors to Dublin might like to know that henceforth there will be a daily Mass in the Extraordinary form. It will be offerd at 8am Monday to Friday and at 9am on Saturday at St Kevins Church Harrington Street.
Solemn Mass will continue to be offered on Sundays at 11am in St Audoen's Church High Street. Both churches are in the city centre and are well served by public transport.

This is regarding Anonymous' post of the Letter to Priests by the Cardinal Jose Policarpo of Lisboa (in Portuguese).

Being a Spanish speaker, here is a loose translation of the main points (please feel free to make corrections):

1. ....those who desire the Litrugy of the 1962 Missal are minority...

4.Priests should not impose their personal preference for the former liturgy on to the faithful....such may only take place in "private masses" without the people. Private masses may not be announced.

If the people request such masses....a period of discernment must first take place...including communication between the priest and bishop.....

5.4 Sacred spaces: our churches are arranged for the celebration according to the Missal of Paul VI, which forsaw cebrating "versus populum" ...any attempts to modify such spaces to accomodate the celebration of the rite of 1962 are forbidden.

7. Celebrations (of the old rite) must be during the week.....the Holy Father hypothesises that if a significant number of faithful request it, such be allowed on Sundays and holy days.....in our Docese, I ask of Pastors that, for the time being, no such masses take place....until the situation is carefully analysed.....

8. Let us be vigilant, so that this opening by the Holy Father....is not transformed into a campaign for the old Liturgy.....

10. I sign this letter on the 14 of September, the day Summorum Pontificum takes effect...as an expression of our communion and submission to the Holy Father, while at the same time, assuming (keeping) our pastoral responsibilities as Shepherd of the Church in Lisboa.

MISA TRADICIONAL EN SEVILLA (ESPAÑA)

Estimados amigos:

Statements from the conference of bishops of the Philippines:

http://www.cbcponline.net/presidents/2007/July%209%202007%20A.html

STATEMENT ON THE "TRIDENTINE" MASS

We fully welcome with respect and appreciation the recent Apostolic Letter of Pope Benedict XVI on the "Tridentine" Mass. It clarifies for us the status of the Tridentine Mass in the Latin Language.

In accordance with the Apostolic Letter ("Motu proprio") entitled "Summorum Pontificum" of Pope Benedict XVI, the celebration of the so-called Tridentine Mass, which is in the Latin language, as approved by Blessed Pope John XXIII in 1962 continues to be fully permissible as an extraordinary form of the Mass. The Tridentine Mass was never forbidden or abrogated.

The so-called "New Mass" which was introduced after the Second Vatican Council and approved by Pope Paul VI in 1970 has become more popular among the people because it allowed the use of some approved adaptations, including the use of the popular languages and dialects. It became the ordinary form of the Mass, widely celebrated in the parish churches.

When may the Tridentine (Latin) Mass be celebrated? According to the letter of Pope Benedict XVI, it may be celebrated by catholic priests of the Latin Rite: a) in private masses, b) in conventual or community mass in accordance with the specific statutes of the Congregation, c) in parishes upon request of the faithful and under the guidance of the bishop (in accordance with Canon 392). In such Masses, however, the readings may be given in the vernacular.

This permission given by Pope Benedict XVI means that the Mass in Latin and in accordance with the formula of the Council of Trent, hence Tridentine, with the celebrant's back to the faithful may be celebrated, as it was never forbidden or abrogated. For new priests, this will require formation in the Latin Mass.

Now, we are instructed that in the liturgy of the Mass, there is the ordinary form which is that approved by Pope Paul VI in 1970 after the Vatican II; and there is the extraordinary form - the Tridentine (Latin) Mass which is that approved by Blessed Pope John XXIII in 1962. The two forms will have their way of leading the faithful to the true worship of God in prayer and liturgy; and may even be a factor for unity in the Church.

On www.tridentinsk.suite.dk you will find letters telling a (so far) sad story about the motu proprio in Denmark: 40 faithful have made a demand for every Sunday Mass (extr.) in a parish in central Copenhagen. One of the priests working in this parish already is saying the extr. Mass once a month (but in a remote school chapel), since 2003 in fact. The Rector has flatly refused, invoking that the "parish council has decided..." and claiming, incorrectly, that the said priest cannot celebrate the extr. Mass!
Appeal to the bishop is being prepared. But some damage results from this scandaleous lack of attention to what the MP says (Art.5.1 in particular!).

Dear Gentlefolks,

I'd like to let everyone know about a new publication: 'True Source of the Sodality Spirit', by Fr. Hugo Rahner, S.J. (the Catholic brother).

It is available at: http://www.lulu.com/content/1699282

It is a commentary upon - and contains as an appendix - the 'lost' Apostolic Constitution of Pius XII, Bis Saeculari Die, issued in 1948.

TLM Returns to Sacred Heart in Copenhagen, Denmark

A petition for Mass in the extraordinary form on every Sunday and Holy Day of obligation was signed by 40 faithful in August 2008 and delivered to the parish of Sacred Heart in central Copenhagen on Sept. 1.

On January 6 (Epiphany) the parish announced that the Mass will be celebrated in this form on every first and third Sunday, in the parish church, at 6PM. This good news comes after three months without the Mass - as the former monthly Indult Mass, held in a school chapel, was ceased in November.

Not everything in Ireland is so grim. Have you checked out the recent post on NLM: "Usus Antiquior in Cardinal Newman's Dublin Church". Mind you, the Sodality of Our Lady had permission for the EF at their monthly meetings long before the MP came out. Still, it's good news.

Here is the link to a take on the High Mass in Greensboro Jan 13,2008. Father Ferguson, FSSP did a magnificent job organizing and presiding over the most beautiful Mass I have ever attended.

Someone should buy the rights to this and put high resolution copies online. People read news articles about how B16 turns his back to the people, but it's unfair because they aren't shown this:

That site is often difficult to pull up, so here's a mirror of the photo:

I'm not sure if they sell rights to these photos.. but I was in Rome for a semester, so I know that it wouldn't be that difficult to bring a flashdrive into L'Osservatore Romana while browsing the computers with the photos on them...

I mean, I never saw any signs that said you can't do that... O:-)

Here in Boston, Massachusetts one church, Holy Trinity, began, in February, to offer the traditional Latin Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of obligation. It is the only church here so to do. Recently Sean Cardinal O'Malley annnounced that the church will be closed effective June 30th.

In fairness and honesty I must note that the church was already on a short list for closure.
