Reading Bishop Steib's statement, it is clear that this is not the writing of an educated man.

To be completely uninformed on the subject matter at hand, and then to have the audacity to present oneself as an authority on that subject, even to the point of imposing limitations not called for with regard to the subject, is the sign of a man removed from the consequences of real life. Such consequences are eventually found out by those who live with their effects. Unfortunately, it is often after the originator of the errors moves on.

It is small wonder that we have a crisis of faith, never mind a crisis of clerical sexual abuse. Actions without consequences are rarely well-planned, and those who live with the results always suffer the most.

Bishop Steib won't suffer much. And so it goes...
